We’re hiring!

Vixen First Nations Peer Worker

Vixen is looking for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander sex worker to join our team to provide culturally safe peer education and support, outreach and advocacy to First Nations people who sell, trade or exchange sex.

Vixen recognises that we live and work on stolen Aboriginal land that was never ceded, and we support the self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sex workers and communities. First Nations people who sell, trade or exchange sex carry the combined harms of colonisation, racism and whorephobia, and this role exists so that our work reaches, is shaped by and is accountable to First Nations communities.

About the role

We're looking for a First Nations sex worker with community connection and a commitment to self-determination and sex worker rights. The role is responsible for outreach, peer education and support, building relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and First Nations services, and bringing First Nations sex worker voices into Vixen's work.

The work includes:

  • Outreach and engagement with First Nations people who sell, trade or exchange sex, in person, in community and online, built on trust and at people's own pace.

  • Peer education and support on health and wellbeing, safety at work, sexual health and harm reduction, and information, referral and advocacy on issues like housing, legal and police matters, finances and family.

  • Building respectful, reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, Aboriginal Health Services, Elders and community, and working alongside Scarlet Alliance's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sex Worker Advisory Group (ATSISWAG).

  • Providing cultural guidance to Vixen and bringing First Nations perspectives into our planning, resources and advocacy.

  • Contributing to resources that are culturally appropriate and led by First Nations sex worker voices.

We know many First Nations people who do this work don't call themselves sex workers, and nobody needs to take on that label to get support from Vixen or to apply for this role.

How we'll support you

We recognise that cultural knowledge, community connection and cultural brokerage are real and skilled work. Vixen will recognise and resource cultural load, provide cultural supervision from a First Nations sex worker separate from line management, and support cultural leave and community responsibilities. Building cultural safety at Vixen is shared work across the whole team, and an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person will be involved in the recruitment and selection process.

Position details

  • Based at our Brunswick office in Naarm and includes some regional travel, with hybrid working available.

  • Permanent, part-time position (30 hours per fortnight).

  • SCHADS Level 4 paid above award, plus salary packaging and extra annual leave over the New Year period.

This is an identified position. Applicants must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and have lived or living experience of sex work, or of selling, trading or exchanging sex. If you're excited by the role and think you can bring something to it, you don't need to tick every box to apply.
